ENEA – the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development – is the Italian public research body dedicated to energy, new technologies, and sustainable development. With more than 2,200 researchers and technologists across several national research centres, ENEA carries out scientific research, innovation, and technology transfer to support the ecological and digital transition at both national and international levels.
The Energy Technologies and Renewable Sources Department (TERIN) focuses on advanced technologies for renewable energy, energy efficiency, and the integration of sustainable systems. TERIN promotes multidisciplinary research and applied innovation in artificial intelligence through activities in research, knowledge transfer, and higher education, in close collaboration with academic, industrial, and institutional partners across Europe.
Within TERIN, the Energy & Data Science Laboratory (EDS) studies and develops products and solutions for the whole IoT pyramid, from sensors to robotics applications, with particular attention to human-centred artificial intelligence solutions, integrating research, skills development, and technology transfer into the energy and environmental domains. Its main research areas include AI for energy forecasting, fault detection, and decision support, in particular for photovoltaic, wind energy, and water applications; system modelling and digital infrastructures for smart IoT networks; monitoring and control of environmental and natural resources through AIoT and digital twin platforms; the development of methodologies and regulatory frameworks to ensure resilience, transparency, and sustainability in the energy sector; and robotic applications for energy and safety.
